WIND TURBINE PERFORMANCE TESTING

ESB International wanted to have their turbines’ power curve tested. The IEC standard 61400-12-1 deals with this procedure. The standard sets a large number of criteria that must be adhered to in order to comply. In order to achieve this, the company needed to engage with a company that had the advanced monitoring and programming engineering skills required to complete this project.

ESBI chose Premium Power (www.premiumpower.ie) to provide a temporary monitoring system which was to be programmed to carry out the necessary mathematical and statistical calculations required by the standard.

Premium Power constructed, programmed and tested a purpose build monitoring system and installed this at a number of points on a wind farm located in the midlands of Ireland. The wind farm consisted of 27 turbines over a wide area.

The metering system consists of:

Highly accurate metering components programmed to generate statistical information to comply with IEC 61400-12-1.

GSM mobile components to enable nightly backhaul of the data to a server.

Highly accurate solid Core CT’s compliant to the required standard, IEC 60044.

The testing kit is deployed in a Ruggedized case and easy to setup on site.

All of the data is stored on a Database Server at Premium Power offices where complete reports can be generated for the client.
