GENERATOR DEMAND CONTROL

A world leading healthcare company based in the West of Ireland had insufficient electrical supply capacity to meet the demand of the expanding plant, due to delays in the completion utility network infrastructural work. It was decided to use the plant standby generator to peak-lop at times of high demand so as to prevent the incoming supply from tripping on overload. Premium Power Ltd. (www.premiumpower.ie) was chosen to design, supply and integrate a generator control system, which could achieve this goal automatically. The Premium Power demand control system causes part of the plant to run in island mode and to take supply from the standby generator during times of high demand. The system then independently monitors both the utility and generator loads and, when the total reduces to the required safe level signals the generator control system to shut down and return the island load to the utility supply. The demand control system, based on ION® by PMC, Schneider Electric (www.schneider-electric.com), was designed and programmed by Premium Power to aggregate load supplied by local generation and the utility so as to control the starting and stopping of the main generator.

POWER QUALITY ANALYSIS

The advanced power meters used provide detailed monitoring of electrical power quality. This enables engineering or maintenance staff to identify the types and severity of electrical distortions coming from the utility or plant loads. By studying this data it is possible to design and cost the required solutions in order to improve up time for critical equipment.

ENERGY MANAGEMENT

The system also allows this healthcare plant to monitor and manage its energy consumption, to identify where energy cost saving can be made and to budget for future costs. All of this data can be viewed through a web feature called the WebReach® application, which allows engineering, production and financial managers to view the relevant information from their web browsers.
